Kudra Leadership Program

"Advancing Women to Advance Nigeria"

Building on the Young Women’s Leadership programme YWL, in 2006 KIND launched Kudra, a leadership programme that trains 1250 young women in universities in Lagos, Bornu, Cross River, Anambra and Plateau annually. Kudra is taken from ‘qudra’, an Arabic word that is the root of Kudirat Abiola’s name. It literally means power and conveys the programme’s intention to help restore young women to their full potential by empowering them with information, skills and tools necessary to effectively engage in transforming their lives, communities and eventually their nation.

As with the Young Women’s Leadership Programme (YWL), Kudra offers technical leadership training such as (negotiation skills and public speaking); seminars on sexuality and reproductive health, gender issues, and women’s rights; training in critical skills such as entrepreneurship and financial management; an alumni network where the young women graduates of the program can continue to offer each other personal and professional support; and a mentoring program that connects established and emerging women leaders.

Kudra is offered through a 5-day intensive training programme. It continues until 2008.

unior Kudra is KIND's leadership programme designed for girls in Lagos high schools. The programme aims to reach 250 girls in 2008, increasing to about 1000 in subsequent years.
