KIND stands for the Kudirat Initiative for Democracy, a not-for-profit organization based in Lagos, Nigeria. We work primarily in Nigeria in the areas of leadership development for young women and on collaborative projects aimed at removing barriers to women’s public participation and ending violence against women.
KIND’s vision is an Africa where women are full participants in the continent’s social, economic and political development.
Our mission is to empower democracy and development in Africa by strengthening organizations and creating initiatives dedicated to the advancement of women.
Contradictory attitudes, values, and practice’s contest for legitimacy in Nigeria today. Will its nascent democracy grow into a strong system where there is justice, stability and economic well-being? Or will it continue to produce the existing corrupt system where most of the nation’s resources serves a few, fueling injustice, instability and poverty? The country is at a crossroads and must choose.
Nigeria’s women, who have gained least and paid most under military rule, offer a strong possibility for change. Women have the most to gain from living in a viable, democratic state. Now, as the nation’s leaders at all levels position to exploit the system, several women are presenting inspiring examples of serviceleadership. However, they remain few and unsupported.
