KIND’S EXPOSURE TOUR FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES AND STAKEHOLDERS
On 10th July 2018 and 12th July, 2018, KIND, under its VOICE Influencing Project themed ENDING VIOLENCE, DISCRIMINATION, AND MARGINALIZATION AGAINST WOMEN AND PWDs IN NIGERIA, proceeded on an Exposure Tour for PWDs in Lagos State. PWD students from Module Cole Childcare and Treatment Home, Yaba, Lagos were taken to Ipakodo Inclusive Primary School, Ikorodu on the first day while students from National Orthopedic Special School, Igbobi, Lagos were taken to Olisa Inclusive School, Mushin, Lagos.
The aim of the tour was to promote inclusive education in Lagos state by exposing policymakers to policy deprivations and institutional barriers faced by PWD students and community.
Stakeholders at the tour included Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Lagos State Ministry of Education, Lagos State Office of Disability Affairs (LASODA), Local Government Education Authority (LGEA) of the schools, PTA representatives, Disabled People’s Organization (DPOs) and NGOs.
At the end of the programme, the following objectives were achieved:
- The ET was an avenue for special needs students in exclusive schools to experience firsthand an inclusive school setting;
- The ET was an avenue for special needs students to interact with stakeholders firsthand;
- The ET created an opportunity to influence policy makers to encourage inclusive education across more schools I’m Lagos and Nigeria; and
- It was an opportunity for stakeholders to determine the challenges to inclusive education and how to address it
